Overview:
What is this test?
This laboratory test is performed on a blood sample to check the bone marrow activity by measuring the percentage of reticulocytes present. It helps in investigating conditions related to blood.
Why is this test performed?
This test is performed:
- To determine bone marrow activity
- To measure the capability of bone marrow to produce RBCs
- To diagnose specific types of anemia
- To monitor the efficacy of treatment.
- What are reticulocytes?
Reticulocytes are immature red blood cells, they give rise to red blood cells. They are produced in the bone marrow and circulate in the bloodstream.
- What is anemia?
Anemia is a disease characterized by low number of oxygen carrying red blood cells or hemoglobin. There are various causes of anemia but, the most common cause is iron deficiency.
- How to prepare for this test?
Inform your doctor about your use of all the prescribed and non-prescribed medicines. No special preparations are required for this test.
- What are the symptoms of anemia?
Following are the symptoms of anemia:
- Fatigue
- Pallor
- Irregular heartbeat
- Chest pain
- Weakness
- Cold hands
- What are other causes of abnormal test results?
High altitude and pregnancy are likely to increases retic count for a temporary period.
Normal ranges:
Adults: 0.5 - 2.5%
Children: 2 - 6%.
- Interpretation of test results:
Causes of high retic count:
- Hemorrhage
- Destruction of RBCs
- Hemolytic disease of the newborn
Causes of Low retic count:
- Bone marrow failure
- Aplastic, pernicious, or iron deficiency anemia
- Kidney disease
- Alcohol abuse
- Cirrhosis.
