What is this test?
This is a common laboratory test to check the quality and quantity of semen produced by the patient during ejaculation. This test measures the count of sperm, shape of sperm, and motility of sperm. It is also called sperm count or sperm analysis.
Why is this test performed?
This test is performed:
- To screen for male infertility
- After vasectomy.
- How to prepare for this test?
- Avoid sexual activity for a week before the test
- Inform your doctor about the use of medicines especially, antibiotics
- Collect the sample two hours after the start of the meal.
- Can I collect the sample at home?
Yes, you may collect the sample at home but submit it to the laboratory within half an hour.
- Can I use lubricants to ease the ejaculation?
Using lubricants for ejaculation is not recommended. It may affect the motility of sperm.
- What factors can influence the test results?
Following factors may influence the test results:
- Alcohol abuse
- Smoking
- Intake of caffeine
- Homeopathic medicines.
- What is vasectomy?
Vasectomy is a permanent contraceptive method for males. It blocks the sperm from reaching the semen by sealing the tubes that carry sperm.
Normal values:
- Sperm count: 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen
- Sperm motility: 50% or more of sperms should be motile
- Sperm morphology: At least 4% normal shaped sperms
- Semen Volume: 5ml or half teaspoon
- pH of semen: 1 - 8
- Liquefaction time: 20 minutes
- Interpretation of test results:
Abnormal results in more than one of the following values may be associated with infertility. Re-tests may be required to confirm the diagnosis.
