OVERVIEW:

  • What is this test?

This laboratory test is performed on a sputum (phlegm) sample to detect and identify an Acid fast bacillus called Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. This bacteria causes a serious lung infection called Tuberculosis.

Why is this test performed?

This test is performed if the patient has symptoms of Tuberculosis. Symptoms include:

  • Chronic cough
  • Chest pain
  • Fatigue
  • Fever and chills
  • Weakness.
  • Taking sample: A sample of lower respiratory, morning sputum is collected in a sterile container provided by the laboratory.
  • The sample should be sent to the laboratory for culture and sensitivity testing.
  • Culture: The sample is stored at room temperature to notice the growth of the Mycobacterium Tuberculosis.
  • Sensitivity: Further testing is done to notice the sensitivity of the organism to different medicines. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is commonly resistant to one or two drugs used in the treatment.
  1. What is sputum?

Sputum is a thick mucus and saliva produced by the respiratory tract in reaction to an infection. It should not be confused with saliva.

 

  1. How is tuberculosis treated?

Tuberculosis is treated by monotherapy or combination of the following medicines:

  • Isoniazid
  • Rifampicin
  • Ethambutol
  • Pyrazinamide
  1. What is tuberculosis?

TB is a serious bacterial infection caused by mycobacterium tuberculosis. It majorly affects the lungs.

 

  1. What happens if I can’t cough up enough sputum for the sample?

Other methods of collecting sample include:

  • Inducing sputum by inhaling saline aerosol
  • With the help of a bronchoscope.
  1. How much sputum is required for sample?

A minimum of 2mL sputum is acceptable for the sample.

 

  1. What are the risk factors for TB?

Risk factors of TB include:

  • Close contact with an active TB patient
  • Immune suppressing diseases
  • TB endemic areas.

 

  1. Are there any risks of bronchoscopy?

You don’t necessarily need bronchoscopy. If you have undergone bronchoscopy, your throat may feel sore and hoarse for some time.

  • Positive or negative
  • Interpretation of test results:
  • Positive: Mycobacterium tuberculosis detected and identified on culture.
  • Negative: No growth on culture in 24-48 hours.

You should get tested:

  • If you have cough or other symptoms indicating tuberculosis
  • To monitor the treatment or progress of infection
  • To confirm a positive AFB smear test.
