OVERVIEW:
What is the tracolimus lab test?
A tracolimus lab test is a blood test that measures the level of tracolimus present in the blood.
Why is the tracolimus lab test done?
A tracolimus lab test is done in order to:
- Establish a dosing regimen,
- Maintain a therapeutic level,
- Detect and avoid toxicity.
What does the tracolimus lab test measure?
A tracolimus lab test measures the amount of tracolimus circulating in the blood. Tracolimus is an immunosuppressive medicine (reduces body’s natural defense system). It is given to people who undergo organ transplantation in order to avoid organ rejection.
Are there any risks associated with this test?
There are no known risks associated with this test.
How should I prepare for this test?
This test does not require any special preparation.
When should I get this test done?
It is recommended to get this test done 12 hours after your last dose, just before taking your next dose.
Does alcohol affect tacrolimus levels?
Alcohol may increase blood levels of tracolimus and increase the risk of serious side effects.
Does tacrolimus cause hair loss?
Tacrolimus appears to be associated with alopecia (hair loss) in patients who have received a kidney and/or pancreas transplant and the increased risk for hair loss seems to be dose related.
Normal range of tracolimus in the blood is between 5-15 ng/mL.
