What is this test?
This is a laboratory test performed on secretions collected from the throat to detect the microorganism causing infections of the throat, most commonly Strep throat.
Why is this test performed?
This test is performed to diagnose the following infections:
- Strep throat
- Rheumatic fever
- Scarlet fever
- Thrush
- Pertussis
- Diphtheria.
- How to prepare for the test?
Avoid using antiseptic mouthwashes before the test. No other preparations are required.
- How will I feel during the test?
Throat swab is an easy test but some patients may experience temporary gagging, nausea, vomiting, and sore throat.
- How is a bacterial throat infection treated?
Antibiotics are used to treat a bacterial throat infection. Penicillin and Amoxicillin are commonly prescribed.
- What are the symptoms of a throat infection?
Following are the symptoms of a bacterial throat infection:
- Pain on swelling
- Swollen tonsils
- Headache
- Fever
- Tender and swollen lymph nodes
- Red spots on the roof of mouth
- Body ache.
- What is the cause of a strep throat?
Streptococcus Pyogenes is a very contagious bacterium. It can spread through airborne droplets from mouth and enter the body through mouth, nose, or eyes.
Positive or negative
- Interpretation of test results:
Positive: Pathogenic organism detected and identified on culture. Sensitivity testing provides the most effective treatment for the causative organism.
Negative: No growth on culture.
