A sodium Na+ urine lab test is done to check the level of sodium in a certain amount of urine. This test is an important evaluator of kidney function and the level of hydration.

To prepare for this test you need to stop taking medicines that affect sodium level in urine.

Does drinking more water reduce sodium level in the body?

Drinking more water helps in flushing out sodium from the body.

Does exercise lower sodium levels?

Exercise helps in lowering sodium levels as sodium is lost in the sweat.

WHAT DOES THE TEST MEASURE?

The test measures the amount of sodium in your urine.  It helps diagnose kidney and adrenal gland disorders.

 

INTERPRETATION OF THE TEST?

The results of the test vary depending on the following factors:

  • Age 
  • Sex
  • Medicines
  • Diet-results vary considerably depending on what you have eaten

Normally, amount of sodium in urine is 40-220 milliequivalents/ liter/ day. 

Higher than normal levels may be due to the following reasons:

 

  • Diet high in sodium
  • Disorder of the adrenal glands
  • Vomiting 
  • Use of water pills
  • Hypothyroidism decreased activity of thyroid gland

 

Lower than normal levels may be due to the following reasons:

  • Dehydration
  • Diarrhea 
  • Kidney problems

Please note, a high sodium urine level does not necessarily mean you have a health problem.
