Primary Uses

Indications

This medication is used to treat vitamin E deficiency because of malabsorption (inability to absorb nutrients), and in congenital (by birth) or hereditary (inherited) chronic cholestasis (long term blockage in the liver). It is also used to treat intermittent claudication (cramping in the leg) and various fertility disturbances.

Side Effects

This medication may cause diarrhea. Less commonly it may cause asthenia (weakness), disturbances in serum potassium and sodium concentration (electrolyte disturbances in blood), alopecia (hair falls out in small patches), pruritus (itch) and rash.

Pregnancy

The risk of using this medication in pregnancy cannot be ruled out. Consult your healthcare provider for further details.

The effect of this medication in lactating females is undetermined. Consult your healthcare provider for further information.

Precautions

This medication may induce vitamin K deficiency. It can also cause a predisposition to thrombosis (clot formation in a blood vessel) or necrotizing enterocolitis (inflamed intestine) with a large oral dosage in neonates. Renal (kidney) or hepatic (liver) impairment, dehydration(less water and fluids inside the body).  

Contraindications

This medication should not be used in preterm newborns.
