This medication is used for treating severe bronchospasm (narrowing of the air passages), status asthmatic (condition characterized by one asthma attack followed by another without a break in between), and controlling and preventing symptoms of lung impairment such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and feeling of tightness caused by diseases such as Emphysema, Bronchitis, etc. It can also be used for treating uncomplicated premature labor.
The patients administered with this medicine may experience fine tremors, headache, increased heart rate, sleep disturbances, decreased potassium levels, allergic reactions, narrowed air passages, muscle cramps, lactic acidosis (blood pH disturbances), and irritation at the back of the mouth.
Please use this medicine with precaution for uncomplicated Premature Labor as it may lead to serious problems such as abortion especially during the first and second trimesters.
Salbutamol works by widening the airway passages in the lungs and allowing easier gaseous exchange.
It is best to rinse your mouth and spit the water after you have taken your dose. Please keep the inhaler mouthpiece clean and wash it with lukewarm running water for about 30 seconds. Lastly, air dry it completely.
The definite cause for tremors is unknown. However, some studies suggest that initial doses of Salbutamol have direct effects on the muscles, causing fine tremors.
You may drink water after taking Salbutamol. However, please spit the first sip and do not swallow it. Swallowing it may increase the severity of side effects.
Salbutamol is usually excreted in the urine within 24 hours after administration (60-78%).
