It is used as a prophylaxis (prevention) in kidney allograft (a tissue graft from a donor) rejection and as a
combination therapy to corticosteroids and cyclosporine in acute organ rejection.
Its side effects are hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, sneezing, wheezing, bronchospasm (narrowed
respiratory tract), pulmonary edema (swelling around lungs), cardiac failure, respiratory failure, and
capillary leak syndrome (massive leakage of blood from vessels).
Research suggests that this medicine should be avoided by pregnant women.
Its use is prohibited in nursing mothers.
