This medicine is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It is indicated in respiratory, ENT (ear, nose and throat), Urinary tract and soft tissue infections, Gonorrhea (an infection caused by a sexually transmitted bacterium), dental abscess (pus build up inside the teeth or gums), severe recurrent or acute otitis media (it is a group of inflammatory diseases of the middle ear). And also used in the prophylaxis of bacterial endocarditis (an infection caused by bacteria that settle in the heart lining, a heart valve or a blood vessel).

Patients administered with this medication may have a hypersensitivity reaction (intolerance) to it or they may experience gastrointestinal discomfort. Very rare adverse effects of this medication include hepatitis (inflammatory condition of the liver), cholestatic jaundice (obstruction in the transport of bilirubin; a yellow compound that helps in the metabolism (chemical reactions) of heme), pseudomembranous (antibiotic associated) colitis (inflammation of the inner lining of large intestine), increased INR (blood takes a longer time to form clots), and acute (short term) generalized exanthematous pustulosis (skin reaction related to medicine administration).

This medication is contraindicated in patients that are suffering from infectious mononucleosis (viral disease characterized by fever, sore throat, and pain). It is also contraindicated in patients that have hypersensitivity (intolerance) to penicillin (antibiotic), cephalosporins (antibiotic) or other beta-lactam drugs.

This medicine should be taken with food.
  • Take with or without meals. Preferably taken with meals to reduce abdominal discomfort.
  • Take at regular intervals.
  • Refrigerate reconstituted suspension and shake well before each use.
  • Water or bloody stools can occur after 2 months of therapy and can be serious, require immediate treatment.
  • Complete full course of therapy even if the symptoms are subsided and you feel better.
Bacterial Infections

Clavulanic acid is used in the treatment of infections of the respiratory tract, ENT (ear-nose-throat), skin and soft tissue, and urinary tract infections.

Patients using clavulanic acid may at times experience dizziness, headaches, convulsions, hepatitis, and jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes). If you experience any of these symptoms for a long period of time, consult your doctor immediately.

Clavulanic acid should not be used in patients with penicillin hypertensitivity or history of co-amoxiclav-associated or penicillin associated jaunduice and hepatic (liver) dysfunction.

Bacterial Infections
Amoxil (amoxicillin) is available as a generic drug termed amoxicillin
Amoxicillin is a similar antibiotic to penicillin. It works by killing the bacteria that cause the infection.
Please store the oral form of this medicine at room temperature (18-25 Celsius). Keep medicine away from children, and excessive light and moisture. Read the leaflet provided with the medicine for further storage guidance.
Dairy products include milk as well as butter, yogurt, and cheese. After taking an antibiotic you may need to wait for up to three hours before eating or drinking any dairy products
It takes around 1 hour to reach peak levels in the body.
Amoxicillin can make you feel tired but excessive tiredness or difficulty in staying awake requires immediate medical attention.
Such patients are either advised to use an antacid along with clavulanic acid or prescribed an alternate medicine.
Such patients are advised to consult to their respective physician for an alternate medicine.
A complete antibacterial effect is only not achieved on using this medicine along with some other antibiotics. Sole use of clavulanic acid cannot achieve the former effect.
Although it is, but a prior consultation with doctor is recommended before using it.
You are advised to consume plenty of fluids and non-spicy food to avoid stomach ulcer and acidity.

The effect of this medication is undetermined in a lactating female, therefore, consult your doctor before using this medicine.  
The patients taking this medication must be cautious in cases of liver and kidney impairment, infectious mononucleosis (a group of symptoms usually caused by Epstein-Barr virus) and in those carrying risk of crystalluria (cloudy urine) on having high doses and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis ( a rare skin reaction related to medicines). Therefore, stay hydrated and avoid overdosage
Clavulanic acid can be used during pregnancy.
Consult your doctor before using clavulanic acid when breastfeeding.
Clavulanic acid should be used with extreme caution in patients with impaired hepatic (liver) function and patients should be kept well hydrated.
