Bacterial Infection

This medication is used in the treatment of lower respiratory tract infections, complicated and uncomplicated urinary tract infection, intra-abdominal (stomach area) infections, skin and skin structure infections, bacterial septicemia (serious bloodstream infection), and polymicrobial (multiple bacteria) infections.

Patients administered with this medication may experience nausea (feeling like vomiting), constipation (difficulty in passing stool), diarrhea (frequent watery stools), trouble sleeping, headache, renal (kidney) failure, hemolytic (rupturing of red blood cells) anemia (lack of healthy red blood cells), hepatitis (inflammatory condition of liver), and pseudomembranous (drug induced) colitis (inflammation of the lining of large intestine).

This medication is contraindicated in a patient that has on-going diarrhea (frequent watery stools) from an infection with clostridium difficile bacteria, low amount of potassium in blood, increased risk of bleeding due to clotting disorder, seizures (sudden and uncontrolled disturbance in the brain causing periods of unconsciousness), neutropenia (reduction in the number of neutrophils), and chronic (long term) kidney disease. This medication is also contraindicated in a patient that is allergic to penicillin, cephalosporin, and beta lactam drugs.

  • This medication should be injected slowly over at least 30 minutes.
  • Contact prescriber if there is chest pain, difficulty in breathing, difficulty in swallowing, palpitations (sensation that your heart has skipped a beat), irregular heartbeat, swelling of mouth or lips, white patches on tongue or in mouth, severe persistent diarrhea (frequent watery stools), and unusual fever.
  • Before using, check this medication for particles or discoloration.

It is important to let your doctor know your complete medical history especially of cystic fibrosis (hereditary disease that affects lungs and digestive system), kidney disease, and seizure disorder (sudden and uncontrolled disturbance in the brain causing periods of unconsciousness). This medication contains sodium, therefore, consult your doctor before using this medication if you are on a salt restricted diet.
Tazobactam injection is used to treat pneumonia (inflammation of air sacs in one or both lungs), skin, gynecological, and abdominal (stomach area) infections caused by bacteria.
Piperacillin and tazobactam combination is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of medicines known as penicillin and beta-lactamase inhibitors.
Tazobactam inhibits beta lactamase and prevents the destruction of piperacillin. Therefore, tazobactam is given with piperacillin to enhance the activity of piperacillin in eradicating bacterial infections.
Piperacillin/Tazobactam 2 g / 0.25 g is administered by intravenous infusion (over 30 minutes). Piperacillin/Tazobactam 4 g / 0.5 g is administered by intravenous infusion (over 30 minutes).
This medication is a broad spectrum antibiotic and has antibacterial activity encompassing most gram-negative, gram-positive and anaerobic bacteria.
