Topiramate is a medicine that is used to treat seizures, which are sudden, uncontrollable electrical abnormalities in the brain that cause aberrant behavior and unconsciousness. Topiramate is also used for preventing migraine. Topiramate acts by lowering aberrant electrical activity in the brain.
Topiramate can be taken either with food or without food.
Do not exceed or decrease the recommended dose.
Do not discontinue using Topiramate without first consulting your doctor.
Take Topiramate precisely as directed by your doctor.
Keep Topiramate at room temperature, away from excess heat, direct sunlight and moisture.
Keep Topiramate out of children’s and pets’ reach.
Do not use Topiramate after its expiry date has passed.
This medication is used as an adjunctive therapy (treatment given along with the main treatment) for different types of seizures (sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain which may produce changes in your behavior, movements of consciousness) and in certain types of epilepsy (a brain disorder which causes you to have seizures) in patients inadequately controlled by other medications. It is also used in migraine prophylaxis (to prevent a brain disorder which causes intense headaches). Consult your doctor for further details.
Patients using this medication may at times experience confusion, somnolence (feeling extremely sleepy or drowsy), anxiety , depression ,headache, speech and visual disturbances , finding it difficult to concentrate, mood changes , abnormal behavior , ear pain , dyspnea (difficulty in breathing ), impaired balance and co-ordination ,anemia (less red blood cells in the body), cough , nephrolithiasis (kidney stones) and ataxia (loss of control of body movements). Topiramate should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. It has the potential to harm an unborn child. Pregnant females should consult their doctors for further information.
Topiramate enters breast milk and can have adverse effects on a nursing baby. It is not recommended during lactation. Lactating females should consult their doctors for further information.
Topiramate can make you dizzy, drowsy, or have blurred vision. If you have such symptoms, avoid doing activities that demand mental awareness, such as driving a car.
Topiramate must be taken cautiously in patients who have liver problems since it can exacerbate their condition. Based on the clinical state, your doctor may recommend tests to evaluate your liver function on a regular basis, as well as dose changes or replacements with an appropriate alternative.
Topiramate is excreted from the body through the urine after being filtered by our kidneys. As a result, if you suffer from kidney problems, you should use Topiramate with caution. A decrease in kidney function may result in a buildup of this medicine in the body, increasing the risk of adverse consequences. Depending on your condition, your doctor may alter the dose of Topiramate.
It is not suggested to drink alcohol while taking Topiramate since it can exacerbate adverse effects like dizziness and concentrating difficulties.
Inform your doctor if you are hypersensitive to Topiramate or if you have other allergies before taking Topiramate. Inactive chemicals in this medicine may trigger allergic responses or other complications. For more information, consult your doctor.
Before taking Topiramate, speak to your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have: a specific eye condition (narrow angle glaucoma), kidney disorders (like kidney stones), liver disorders, mental issues (such as depression, suicidal thoughts), lung/breathing disorders, a specific metabolic imbalance (metabolic acidosis), a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet (ketogenic diet), long term diarrhea, weak bones (osteoporosis).
Topiramate may cause you to sweat less, increasing your risk of heat stroke. Avoid activities that may allow you to overheat, like strenuous labor or exercising in hot weather, as well as using hot bathtubs. Drink plenty of drinks and dress lightly when the temperature is too hot. If you overheat, find a cool location to rest and cool down. If you experience a persistent fever, mental/mood problems, a headache, or dizziness, seek medical attention right away.
Inform your doctor or dentist regarding all of the medicines you consume before undergoing surgery (including prescription, nonprescription and herbal medicines).
Children might be more susceptible to the Topiramate's adverse effects, particularly weakening bones, delayed growth, and reduced sweating. For more information, consult a doctor.
Older individuals may be more vulnerable to the adverse effects of Topiramate, particularly dizziness. Dizziness increases the probability of a fall in older adults.
This medication is contraindicated in people who already have depression, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, confusion or suicidal thoughts. It should also not be used in patients who have eye problems such as glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye) or reduced visual acuity (decrease in sharpness of vision) as well as in patients who have liver problems or kidney stones among a host of other conditions. For further details, contact your doctor.
