Primary Uses

Indications

This drug is used for treatment of acute and chronic schizophrenia, other psychosis, and affective symptoms of schizophrenia.

Side Effects

This drug can result in a number of side effects including, orthostatic hypotension (decreased bp with change in posture with reflex tachcardia, extrapyramidal symptoms, galactorrhea (nipple discharge), mentrual disturbances, sexual dysfunction, sleeplessness, anxiety, agitation, headache, fatigue, dizziness, impaired concentration, weight gain, GI imbalance, nasal discharge, rash, blurred vision, depression, drowsiness, respiratory tract infection, ear infection, chest pain, nosebleed, cough, nasal congestion, pharyngolaryngeal pain, GI upset, dry mouth, toothache, persistent and painful penis erection, urinary incontinence, UTI's, bp changes, increased heart rate, AV block, absence of menstruation, development of breats in males, skin reactions, altered LFTs, increased blood glucose, increased prolactin hormone in blood, anemia, conjuctivitis, abnormal muscle weakness, fatigue, muscle spasm, musculoskeletal pain, pain in extremities, fever, swelling, and flu-like illness. Rarely, this drug can also cause neuroleptic malignant syndrome, water intoxication with decreased sodium ions, seizures, involuntary movements of face and jaw, and inoperative floppy iris syndrome (small pupil syndrome).

This drug is contraindicated or not recommended in lactation. Consult your physician for better advice.

Precautions

This drug should be taken with caution in elderly, in patients with kidney, liver and cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, Parkinsonism, memory disorders, hyperprolactinemia (increased prolactin hormone in blood), diabetes, bradycardia (decreased heart rate), hypokalemia (decreased potassium ions), hypomagnesemia (decreased magnesium ions), and family history of QT prolongation. Caution is also advised while driving and operating machinery. Monitor signs of tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements of face and jaw), withdraw if these occur. Monitor for hyperglycemia (increased blood glucose) and weight gain. Risk factors are also present for stroke and venous thromboembolism. Monitor patients with a history of low WBC count or drug induced leucopenia/neutropenia (decreased WBC's/decreased neutrophils). Monitor hormonal status, sedative effects and for development of extrapyramidal symtoms and other movement disorders in children. This drug should also be withdrawn gradually.
