Fungal infections
Description
Fungal infections are caused by fungi, a type of microorganism. Different types of fungi cause different types of fungal infections in humans. A fungal infection can be contagious, and a person can also develop a fungal infection after coming in direct contact with contaminated soil, surfaces, or infected animals. Fungal infections affect different organs of the human body and the most commonly affected organ is skin.
Causes
A fungal infection is caused by fungi. In some cases, harmful fungi from the environment enter the body and colonize it. In other cases, fungi that are normally present in the body multiply out of control and become harmful.
Risk factors
Prominent risk factors of developing a fungal infection are:
- Prolonged use of broad-spectrum antibiotics,
- Indwelling central catheter,
- Total parenteral nutrition,
- Immunosuppression,
- Burns,
- Working in an outdoor environment,
- Excessive sweating,
- Poor blood circulation.
Symptoms
Common symptoms of a fungal infection are:
- Burning, itching, and redness of skin,
- Blisters,
- Stinging,
- Changes in skin color,
- Bald patches on scalp,
- Thick, discolored, or cracked nails,
- Pain and vaginal discharge,
- Lifting of nail bed.
Diagnosis
To reach a diagnosis, your doctor will take your medical history, will ask about the duration, intensity, nature, associated symptoms, frequency, aggravating and relieving factors of your condition, and will closely inspect the affected area.
Management
A fungal infection is treated by administering antifungal medicines.
When to consult a doctor?
You should consult a doctor if your condition is worsening, your condition is not improving, you are having recurrent fungal infections, or there is a general feeling of discomfort and lethargy.
