OVERVIEW
WHAT IS PERITONEAL FLUID?
Peritoneal fluid is a liquid that lubricates the surface of tissue that lines the abdominal wall and pelvic
cavity. It covers most of the organs in the abdomen. It is found in small quantities between the layers of
the peritoneum that line the abdominal wall. Peritoneal fluid moistens the outside of the organs and
reduces the friction of organ movement during digestion and movement.
A fungus is a type of germ that lives in the air, soil and plants, and even on our own bodies. There are
more than a million different kinds of fungi. Most are harmless, but a few types of fungi can cause
infections. There are two main types of fungal infections:
- Superficial (affecting parts of the outer body) affects the skin, genital area, and nails. Superficial infections include athlete's foot, vaginal yeast infections, and ringworm, which is not a worm but a fungus that can cause a circular rash on the skin. While not serious, superficial fungal infections can cause itchy, scaly rashes and other uncomfortable conditions.
- Systemic (affecting systems inside the body) affects the lungs, blood, and other systems in the body. These infections can be serious
WHAT DOES THE TEST MEASURE?
A fungal culture is done to detect the presence of fungi in the peritoneal cavity. Other tests are used to
obtain more serious infections.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS):
How is this test performed?
A peritoneal fluid sample is obtained by inserting a needle into the abdominal cavity.
Is there any preparation required before the test?
The patient is asked to empty the bladder before sample collection.
What is pericentesis and how is it performed?
Paracentesis is the removal of peritoneal fluid from the abdominal cavity with a needle, tubing, and a
container that may have a vacuum.
What is peritonitis?
Peritonitis is the inflammation of the peritoneum caused by a bacterial infection.
What is ascites?
Ascites is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity.
WHY GET TESTED?
A fungal culture is done to find out the presence of fungal infection. The test may help identify specific
fungi, guide treatment or determine if a fungal infection treatment is working. A fungal culture is
ordered if symptoms of fungal infection are present. The symptoms are:
- Red rash
- Itchy skin
- Itching or discharge in the vagina
- White patches in the mouth
- Fever
- Muscles aches
- Headaches
