CHOLESTEROL TOTAL
OVERVIEW
What is Cholesterol –Total?
This test is performed to screen for risk of developing heart diseases. If you are at high risk of developing cholesterol get tested in every 3-5 years.
Why is Cholesterol – Total done?
Cholesterol is tested at more frequent intervals (often several times per year) when a person has one or more risk factors for heart disease. Major risk factors include:
- · Cigarette smoking
- Being overweight or obese
- An unhealthy diet
- Being physically inactive (not getting enough exercise)
- Age (men 45 years or older or women 55 years or older)
- High blood pressure
- Family history of premature heart disease (heart disease in an immediate family member)
- Pre-existing heart
- Having diabetes
HDL TEST
OVERVIEW
What is HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein)?
HDL is considered as good cholesterol because it removes excess cholesterol from the arteries. Cholesterol is an organic molecule, a sterol, type of liquid. Cholesterol is essential for the body to build healthy cells, but a high level of cholesterol can lead to heart problems. Cholesterol is carried through the blood attached to proteins called Lipoproteins.
Why is HDL Test done?
HDL Test is done for the following reasons:
- Ideal to get tested for screening purposes in every five years
- As a part of the lipid profile along with cholesterol
- As a part of a routine checkup
- If there are high-risk factors for heart diseases
LDL TEST
OVERVIEW
What is LDL (low-density lipoprotein)?
LDL is considered bad cholesterol. Low-density lipoproteins carry cholesterol that gets deposited on the inner walls of the vessels. LDL makes up most of your body's cholesterol, high level of LDL increases the risk of heart diseases and stroke.
WHY IS LDL TEST DONE?
This test is performed for the following reasons:
- As a part of lipid profile on a regular medical checkup
- As a diagnostic test for cardiovascular diseases
- To monitor patients with risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.
TRIGLYCERIDES LAB TEST
OVERVIEW
What are Triglycerides?
Triglycerides are a type of fat found in the body. Extra calories are converted into triglycerides. High triglycerides might increase the risk of coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and high sugar.
WHY IS TRIGLYCERIDES TEST DONE?
Triglycerides test is performed for the following reasons:
- As a part of lipid profile on a regular medical checkup.
- If there are high risk factors for heart diseases
- Family history
CHOLESTEROL TOTAL:
INTERPRETATION OF THE TEST RESULTS:
Â
- Cholesterol level below 200mg/dl is considered desirable and reflects a low risk of heart diseases.
- Level between 200-239mg/dl is borderline high and usually signifies a moderate risk of heart disease
- Level greater than 240mg/dl is called high and indicates a high risk of heart disease
