Silver sulfadiazine is used with other treatments to help prevent and treat wound infections in patients with serious burns. Silver sulfadiazine works by stopping the growth of bacteria that may infect an open wound. Silver sulfadiazine belongs to a class of medicine known as sulfa antibiotics. Silver sulfadiazine must not be used on premature babies or on newborns during the first 2 months of life because of the risk of serious side effects.


How To Use

  • Wash your hands before applying silver sulfadiazine.
  • Use your fingertips to apply a small amount of silver sulfadiazine in a thin layer, usually once daily at bedtime or as directed by the doctor.
  • Consult the label directions, the Patient Information Leaflet, or your pharmacist if you have any questions.
  • Use silver sulfadiazine on the skin only.
  • Do not apply to the lip area or inside the nose/mouth.
  • Do not apply to cut, scraped, sunburned, or eczema-affected skin.
  • Avoid getting silver sulfadiazine in your eyes.
  • If silver sulfadiazine gets into your eyes, flush with large amounts of water.
  • Wash your hands after using silver sulfadiazine to avoid accidentally getting it in your eyes.
  • Use silver sulfadiazine regularly to get the most benefit from it.
  • To help remember, use silver sulfadiazine at the same time.
  • Quantity is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
  • Do not increase your quantity or take this product more often than directed.

This medicine is indicated in treatment of skin grafts on the donor site, wounds, burns, infected leg ulcers and pressure sores.

Side Effects

Pain, burning, itching and bluish discoloration of mucous membrane may occur. Rare but serious side effects include fever, chills, sore throat, unusual weakness, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, mental mood, kidney and liver problems etc.

Its use has shown a risk of drowsiness; therefore avoid using it while driving.

Will this medicine leave scars?

Silver Sulfadiazine works on wound infections only. Scar formation is dependent on the severity of the burn. Use other substances to prevent or minimize scarring. For further guidance, consult your healthcare provider.

Can I use anything else to prevent or minimize scaring?

Several creams are available that prevent or minimize scaring. Vaseline may prove to be helpful in treating burns (after a healthcare professional has treated it). Please consult your healthcare provider before use of any medicine.

Can I shower with an open wound?

Showering is preferred to bathing in-case of an open wound. Shower with precaution taking extra care of the burnt area. Make sure not to apply any shower gel, soap, shampoo, or any other irritant to the burnt area as it may worsen the wound and cause pain. Consult your healthcare provider for further guidance.

How do I speed up the wound healing?

There are several ways to speed up wound healing such as applying an antibiotic, cool compresses, honey, aloe Vera, limiting sun exposure, frequent washing with lukewarm clean water, avoiding exposure of burnt area to irritants e.g. dust, etc.

What are the side effects of silver sulfadiazine?

Pain, itching, rash, temporary skin discolouration and destruction of red cells are some of the side effects caused by the use of silver sulfadiazine.

How to administer this medicine?
