Primary Uses

Indications

This vaccine is used as a prophylaxis (treatment given to prevent the disease) and therapy of Rabies (an infectious disease transmitted through an animal's bite already infected with the virus).

Side Effects

This vaccine may cause a mild reaction at inj site (redness and pain), fever, headache, myalgia (muscle pain), lymph node swelling, fatigue (tiredness), athritis (inflammation of joints) and GI disorders. Rarely, circulatory reactions (reduced blood flow and oxygen supply), sweating, chills (shivers), paresthesia (tingling or needle-prick like sensation in skin),allergic & neurological reaction e.g. paresis (weakness).

Precautions

Caution is advised while taking this vaccine in lactating (breastfeeding) women, people with congenital (by-birth) or acquired immunodeficiency (reduced immunity), post-exposure immunization must be avoided in patients with known allergy to vaccine components and inadvertent (unintentional) IV or intravascular injection can lead to shock.

Contraindications

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (treatment to prevent disease) of this vaccine must be avoided in pregnant women, people with known allergies to the components of this vaccine and those with acute disorders (sudden onset illness).

How is rabies vaccine given to patients?

It is given as an injection, into the muscles of the forearm.

What is the right pattern of taking this vaccine, in case of being at risk of having rabies?

You will be required to follow a course of 3 injections, on days 0, 7 and 28 respectively. A booster dose will be needed one year after the completion of the course.

What category of patient is contraindicated the use of this vaccine?

Those with a weak immune system are not advised to take this vaccine.

Does it cause any damage at the site of injection?

A slight redness and itching is observed, that goes off in a matter of few hours.
