This medication is used in the treatment of schizophrenia (mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally), mania (period of extreme high energy), hypomania (period of elevated mood and energy but not so extreme), organic psychosis (abnormal brain function caused by a known physical abnormality), agitation (irritation) in psychotic illness, and childhood behavior disorders. This medication is also used as an adjunct to short term management of anxiety.

Side Effects

Patients administered with this medication may suffer from leucopenia (decrease in number of white blood cells), hyperprolactinaemia (elevated serum prolactin), acute (short term) dyskinesia (involuntary muscle movement), akathisia (inner feeling of restlessness), Parkinsonism (combination of movement disorders), drowsiness (feeling of being sleepy), psychotic disorder (mental disorder causing abnormal thinking), somnolence (strong desire for sleeping), visual disturbances, tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), weight changes, gastrointestinal upset, headache, and depression.

Precautions

Patients of renal (kidney) and hepatic (liver) impairment, epilepsy (neurological disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal causing periods of unusual behavior), hyperthyroidism (elevated levels of thyroid hormone), severe cardiovascular disease, stroke (interruption in the blood supply to brain), pheochromocytoma (tumor of adrenal gland tissue), and depression should stay cautious. Monitor serum electrolytes periodically. Patients that have a family history of QT prolongation (heart muscle takes longer than normal to recharge between beats), heavy alcohol exposure, and hypotension (low blood pressure) should withdraw this medication gradually. It is recommended not to prescribe this drug to elderly or debilitated (weakened state) patients.

Contraindications

This medication is contraindicated in a comatose (deep state of prolonged unconsciousness) patient and in patients suffering from CNS (central nervous system) depression, Parkinson’s disease (combination of movement disorders), dementia (loss of memory and other thinking abilities), recent myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, arrhythmias (problem with rate or rhythm of heart beat), QT prolongation (heart muscle takes longer than normal to recharge between beats), bradycardia (slower heart rate), and hypokalemia (low level of potassium). It is also recommended not to prescribe this medication to an elderly patient.
