Dexamethasone is mainly used to treat blood disorders, skin diseases, immune system disorders and arthritis. It belongs to a class of medicines called corticosteroids. It works by decreasing your immune system’s response to various diseases to reduce symptoms such as swelling and allergic type reactions.

Indications

This medicine is indicated in infected inflammatory conditions, rheumatology (disorders of muscles and joints), pumonary disease  (lung disease). 

Side Effects

Patients using this medication may at times experience corneal thinning, cataract, fungal infection and rise in intraocular (eye) pressure. If you experience any of these symptoms for a long period of time, consult your doctor immediately.

Effect is undetermined in lactating females. Consult your doctor for further advice.

It is safe to drive after taking this medicine.

Precautions

Avoid extreme cautions in chicken pox, measles, renal (impairment), hepatic (liver)failure, myasthenia gravis (neuromuscular disease),epilepsy (seizures), congestive heart failure. Withdraw gradually.

Dexamethasone is contraindicated in following conditions:

  • Active or untreated tuberculosis
  • Herpes simplex virus
  • An infection due to a fungus
  • Intestinal infections
  • Diabetes
  • A condition with low thyroid hormone levels

This medicine is used for treating arthritis (joint disorder), breathing problems, certain bowel disorders, blood/hormone/immune system disorders, certain eye and skin disorders, and various cancers. It can also be used as a test for disorder of the adrenal gland (Cushing’s syndrome).

How to store this medicine?

What are the precautions for taking this medicine?

• Increased appetite • Weight gain may occur • Irregular menstrual periods may occur • Sleep disturbances may occur • May decrease effectiveness of vaccines thus do not get vaccines during use of this medicine unless instructed by your doctor • May cause drowsiness therefore avoid work that requires alertness e.g. driving after taking this medicine • Diabetic patients must be cautious • Limit use of alcohol

How can I reduce the side effects of dexamethasone?

1.Report to your physician any severe, persisting abdominal (stomach area) pain or black, tarry stools. 2.Take the steroid mediation after a full meal or with antacids, as this may help reduce irritation of the stomach. Steroids can increase your appetite (desire to eat food).

Can dexamethasone make me fat?

Steroids such as dexamethasone may cause you to gain excess weight. Steroids can cause an increase in appetite and a build up (retention) of fluid.

Is dexamethasone harmful to humans?

An overdose of dexamethasone is not expected to produce life threatening symptoms. Long term use of high doses can lead to thinning of skin, easy bruising, changes in body fat (especially in your face, neck, back, and waist), increased acne or facial hair, menstrual problems, impotence, or loss of interest in sex.

What are the uses of Tobramycin?

This medication is used for treatment of eye infections such as conjunctivitis. Please note it will only work for bacterial infections, not viral or fungal infections.

How to take Tobramycin?

Use it as prescribed by your health care provider. The dosage of this medicine is dependent on the age, condition, and its severity.

How to store Tobramycin?

Please store this medicine at room temperature (20-25 Celsius) or refrigerate (below 10 C) depending on the medicine type and manufacturer. Will this medicine affect my vision?

You may be required to close your eyes for 10-15 after using this medicine so tasks like driving should be avoided immediately after use. Rarely does this medicine cause vision changes.

This medicine should only be used during pregnancy if no safer alternate is available. The effects of this medicine on lactating females are unknown. Consult your health care provider before use of this medicine.

What are the side effects of using this medicine?

You may experience the following: • Eye redness • Eye/eyelid itching • Temporary blurring of visions for 5-10 minutes

What are the precautions for using this medicine?

• Remove contact lens before using this medicine • Inform doctor if condition doesn’t improve within 4-5 days • Avoid contact of applicator with eye
