Indications

Low doses of this drug are indicated in mild mental and emotional states, nausea and vomiting. High doses are indicated in schizophrenia and psychosis.

Side Effects

This drug can cause decreased WBC's, decreased platelets, increased prolactin hormone, muscle tone and movement abnormalities, Parkinsonism, drowsiness, insomnia, increased heart rate, decreased blood pressure, redness, dry mouth, blurred vision, loss of appetite, depression, rash, photosensitivity, convulsions, blood disorders, agitation, mental dullness, and dizziness.

Precautions

This drug should be given with caution in elderly, in patients with cardovascular disease, undiagnosed vomiting, angina, arrhythmia, Parkinsonism, epilepsy, risk factors of stroke, QT prolongation, or venous thromboembolism. Caution is also advised in kidney and liver impairment, narrow-angle glaucoma, Myasthenia gravis, prostatic hypertrophy, and extremes of temperature. Monitor for involuntary movements of face and jaw, ocular changes, blood disorders, liver impairment, and cardiac conduction defects. Warn patients of impaired judgement and dexterity. Withdraw gradually.

Contraindications

This drug should not be given in comatose states, bone marrow depression, liver damage, blood disorders, and uncontrolled cardiac failure.
