Malaria
Description
Malaria is a life-threatening infectious disease, caused by plasmodium protozoa. It is transmitted by the bite of female anopheline mosquito. Plasmodium has four species:
- Plasmodium falciparum
- Plasmodium vivax
- Plasmodium ovale
- Plasmodium malariae.
Incubation period (time between exposure to pathogenic organism and appearance of symptoms) of all species are 8-25 days but Plasmodium malariae is 15-30 days.
Causes
Malaria is caused only by plasmodium parasite. It can be transmitted through:
- Female mosquito bite
- Blood transfusion
- Vertical transmission (From pregnant mother to their unborn)
- Sharing needles
- Organ transplant.
Risk factors
Outbreaks are common in areas such as Africa, South America, Southern Asia and Central America. Precautions should be taken especially during Monsoon season when water tends to collect in a lot of places, allowing these mosquitoes to breed.
For prevention:
- mosquito repellants should be used along with pesticides.
- clothes that provide protection (full sleeves, etc.)
- Leaving water in containers or any pool of water should be avoided.
- Using mosquito coils, sprays and bed nets can also help greatly.
Symptoms
Malaria usually causes the following symptoms:
- One of the signs of malaria include symptoms that occur periodically or in cycles. The duration of the cycles depends on the species of the malarial parasite.
- High fever with shivering
- sweating, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
- headache, muscle aches and body aches
Diagnosis
To reach a diagnosis, your doctor will take your complete medical history and perform a physical exam. To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor will recommend blood tests for:
- Presence of antigen
- To identify the specie
- To check antibodies against it.
Management
- Medicines such as chloroquine, primaquine, artemether, doxycycline, and artesunate are prescribed to fight the parasite.
- For symptoms of pain and fever, medicines such as paracetamol and ibuprofen are recommended.
- It is recommended to include fresh juices and food with little fat content
