Benzydamine is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine) that reduces pain and swelling (inflammation). Benzydamine is used for mouth ulcers, sore throats, and teething. It comes as mouthwash, mouth spray, and lozenges. Benzydamine is available on prescription or to buy from a pharmacy.

How To Use

  • Benzydamine is for mouth use only.
  • Benzydamine is usually used as a mouthwash, mouth spray, or lozenges for up to 7 days.
  • For mouthwash: gargle with the mouthwash or rinse benzydamine around your mouth for about 20 to 30 seconds, then spit it out. Do not swallow the mouthwash.
  • For mouth spray: Hold the bottle in an upright position and gently lift the spray arm so it’s sticking straight out.
  • Point the spray arm away from your face and press the plunger at the top of the bottle a few times until a fine mist comes out.
  • Aim the spray arm at the sore part of your throat or mouth and press the plunger.
  • Press the plunger 4 times if your dose is 4 sprays, 8 times for 8 sprays.
  • Wipe the end of the spray arm with a clean tissue when you have finished.
  • Push the spray arm down, to rest against the side of the bottle.
  • For lozenges: When taking a lozenge, put it in your mouth and allow dissolving slowly.
  • Do not chew or swallow it whole. You can have 1 lozenge up to 3 times a day.
  • Wait at least 1 hour and 30 minutes between doses.
  • Avoid getting benzydamine in the eyes. If this occurs, rinse right away with water.
  • Quantity is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
  • Do not increase your quantity or take this product more often than directed.

  • Do not use this medicine more than 4 times a day unless directed by your doctor.
  • Allow medication to stay on painful area for at least 1 minute before spitting out or rinsing the mouth.

Indications

Benzydamine is used in the treatment of stomatitis (inflammation of mouth and lips), apthous ulcers (small and shallow lesions that develop on the soft tissues in your mouth), plaque (a sticky deposit on teeth), gingivitis (inflammation of gingiva), oral mucositis (inflammation of oral mucous membranes), denture ulcers (lesions caused by an ill-fitting denture), burning mouth syndrome (burning feeling in mouth), tonsillitis (inflammation of tonsils), and pharyngitis (sore throat).

Side Effects

Benzydamine does not have side effects. If consumed in large quantity, the side effects of benzydamine include:

  • Skin rash
  • Tightness in the chest or throat
  • Trouble breathing or talking
  • Mouth, face, lips, tongue or throat swelling

  • Benzydamine is contraindicated for use in patients with benzydamine
  • Benzydamine should be used with extreme caution in patients with epilepsy or seizures.
  • Benzydamine is contraindicated for patients allergic to aspirin, ibuprofen or, naproxen.

How do you use this medicine?

Apply this medication on the affected area with the help of your finger and let it stay there for 1-4 minutes ideally, after which you can spit it out or rinse your mouth with water.
